Why do Koalas eat poisonous plants as their main meal?
Deadly toxic eucalyptus leaves with seemingly no nutritional value is what Koalas like to eat. However, they have somehow adapted to flushing out the leaves’ toxins and getting nutrition from them. So why would an animal even adapt to do that? Imagine the advantage: there’s food around that only you can eat because it poisons most animals. As the others leave it alone, you can eat as much as you want.
It took a team of scientists to find this out through the Koala Genome Project. You can find out more by looking into the Australian Museum website.
