Tennis is a sport with a long history: it started around the 12th century, with rackets coming in around the 16th.

The Third Estate consisted of some 97 per cent of the population, anyone that doesn’t belong to nobility or the clergy. It even played a role in the French revolution. In 1789, in an attempt to keep tighter control, King Louis XVI shut down the hall where the representatives of the Third Estate used to meet.

In response, a new meeting place was chosen: a tennis court built for the use of Versailles palace. There, the French Third Estate took what is known as the “Tennis Court Oath” and voted to “not separate and to reassemble wherever necessary until the Constitution of the Kingdom is established”.
